LINEAGE HISTORY of SYYG
The Legacy of SYYG Feng Shui: A Lineage of Mastery and Integrity
SYYG Feng Shui is the abbreviation for Yang Gong San Yuan Yuan Gua Feng Shui (楊公三元元卦風水) — a prestigious and time-honored Feng Shui system rooted in ancient wisdom.
At the heart of this tradition is Yang Gong (楊公), an esteemed title for Great Grand Master Yang Yunsong (楊筠松, 834–906 AD). Recognized across all major Feng Shui schools as the founding father of Feng Shui, Master Yang’s legacy continues to influence practitioners around the world.
The term San Yuan (三元) reflects the powerful harmony between Heaven, Earth, and Humanity — a trinity that forms the spiritual and energetic backbone of this system.
Yuan Gua (元卦) refers to the original 24 mountain directions — a sophisticated compass of ancient metaphysics that guides the placement, alignment, and energetic flow of any space.
The Yang Gong San Yuan Yuan Gua (SYYG) system serves as the foundation of all classical Feng Shui schools, influencing renowned methods such as Eight Mansions (八宅風水), Flying Stars (飛星風水), San He (三合風水), and Xuan Kong Da Gua (玄空大卦風水). It is regarded not only as a system — but as the source code of Feng Shui itself.
Historically, Master Yang Yunsong was an imperial official during the late Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), overseeing Feng Shui matters for the royal household. As civil unrest swept through the empire — particularly during the Huang Chao rebellion (黃巢) — Master Yang made a strategic decision to leave Chang’an (modern-day Xi’an 西安). Carrying with him priceless Feng Shui texts and knowledge, he relocated to Jiangxi Province (江西), where he refined and transmitted the teachings that now form the core of authentic Yang Gong Feng Shui.
After relocating to Jiangxi, Great Grand Master Yang Yunsong devoted his later years to passing on his profound Feng Shui knowledge to three carefully chosen disciples:
Ceng Wenchan (曾文辿)
Liao Zaisan (廖再三) – grandfather of the renowned Liao Jinjing (廖金精)
Liu Jiangdong (劉江東, 884–972 AD)
According to tradition, the Ceng and Liao families were entrusted with a family-exclusive legacy: their Feng Shui wisdom was to be passed only from parent to child, never taught to outsiders. This ensured the sanctity of the teachings within each bloodline.
However, the third disciple, Liu Jiangdong, was different. His grandfather was a close friend of Master Yang, and personally requested that his grandson be taught by the great master. Liu Jiangdong became Yang Yunsong’s final and most trusted disciple, staying by his side for six years until the master’s passing in 906 AD.
At just 23 years old, Liu Jiangdong had inherited the entire SYYG Feng Shui system — a complete transmission of Yang Gong’s core teachings. Uniquely, Liu was granted permission to share this sacred knowledge beyond his own family, making him the key figure in the propagation of genuine SYYG Feng Shui throughout China and eventually the world.
Liu Jiangdong practiced Feng Shui for over 60 years, helping countless individuals and leaving behind a legacy of sites still revered today. He passed away at the age of 89 in 972 AD and was laid to rest at Changshu Temple, Yudu (于都葛坳上腦常樹庵) — a sacred site that still stands today.
A Living Lineage: From Liu Jiangdong to the Modern World
Our Feng Shui lineage proudly descends from Liu Jiangdong. Among his written works, the most famous is “Nang Jin” (囊金), or “Capsule Gold” — a treasured text containing authentic Yang Gong Feng Shui principles. This book has been carefully preserved and passed down through generations.
Liu Jiangdong taught his second son Liu Ying (劉穎), and his son-in-law Tan Wenmo (譚文謨). According to the classic “Dili Zhengzong” (地理正宗), Liu also transmitted his teachings to disciples beyond his family: Dei Zixiang, Wang Ludao, and Jianxin Xianweng. These students then passed the lineage further — to names such as Liu Erlang, Liu Zixian, Liu Gouli, and Song Huashi.
The Tan family lineage is also well documented. From Tan Wenmo, the tradition continued through generations, including descendants such as Tan Wenjing and eventually to Tan Kuan (譚寬), the 18th generation successor. Tan Kuan, also known by his courtesy name Zhongjing, later taught Liu Bowen (劉伯溫, 1311–1375) — a legendary strategist who became an advisor to the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty. Liu Bowen famously adjusted the Feng Shui of his birthplace in Zhejiang’s Qingtian Town, now a historical tourist attraction.
Within the Liu family, the lineage continued from Liu Ying through many notable descendants, including Liu Qian, Liu Yunzheng, Liu Yunshan, Liu Yunfeng, and Liu Yunxiu. These names are recorded in Feng Shui classics as key lineage holders. For example, Liu Qian passed his knowledge to Xiao Caiqing, and Liu Yunzheng passed to Liu Zhongtao, who then taught Liao Xinfu.
Both Liu Ying and Tan Wenmo played pivotal roles in preserving and transmitting the SYYG Feng Shui system, generation after generation.
Modern-Day Masters: Guardians of Authentic Yang Gong Feng Shui
Grand Master Liu Guo Sheng (劉國勝, b. 1951) is recognized as the 37th generation lineage holder. During China’s Cultural Revolution, he was sent to a rural area in 1968 — Dianshan Village, Xingguo County, Jiangxi — which happened to be home to the famous Liao Junqing (廖均卿), a Feng Shui master selected in imperial times to manage the Feng Shui of the Ming Dynasty’s Thirteen Tombs — the only instance in Chinese history where a Feng Shui examination was held as part of the imperial exams.
By fate, Grand Master Liu met his teacher — a direct descendant of Liu Jiangdong — and was officially passed the lineage title. Since the early 1970s, he has helped clients across China through authentic Feng Shui practice.
